And while things have obviously gotten better in recent years, there are examples from video games of years- if not decades- past that showcased members of the LGBTQ+ community in a much more positive manner than most of their contemporaries did at the time. They know that somewhere out there, someone is going to identify with this character so it isn't fair to only let them be a footnote, gag, or an instrument for torture. As something of a geek, and a relatively young one at that, I take pride. Actually, don’t buckle in, you’ll never be able to keep up that way. The good news is that there have also always been people out there who want to treat the LGBTQ+ with the kindness and respect that any person should be given. FAIR WARNING: There’s a bit of a story involved with this one, and not just my usual nostalgic musings and sarcastic screeds.

As much as mainstream media tries to deny it, there have always been people out there who do not follow their traditionally held, nuclear family with white picket fence dynamics. There is still a long way to go for positive LGBTQ+ representation in any media out there, but that doesn't mean that there have only ever been awful cracks, bad jokes, and easy pickings for death scenes.
